He gave us no choice,” House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi’s words landed on a nation’s ears, and conscience, as they understood the import of the words, which make Donald Trump, the third serving president to be impeached in the history of the United States. Andrew Johnson (1868) and Bill Clinton (1998) have previously been impeached as serving presidents.

Does this mean Trump vacates the White House?
Far from being removed as the US president, Trump stays for now, and might even end up campaigning for 2020 polls for a second run. At best, Trump has been booked an embarrassing berth in the history books by a house dominated by the Democrats, and at worst he faces the test of his own party members’ loyalty who hold the fort in the Senate where the action now shifts.
Who holds the numbers?
Trump has been impeached by the House where out of the 435 seats, 233 are Democrats, while there are 197 Republicans. One representative is an Independent, while four seats are vacant. The House led by the Democrats moved for impeachment and steamrolled their way through the Republican nays.
Now a formal trial will begin against Trump in the US senate. After the trial, the senate will vote on removing trump from office. This is where the republicans have an upper hand. In the 100-member senate, 53 are republicans and 45, democrats. But that’s not all. To remove trump from office, two-third’s of the senate must vote for impeaching him, which would require 67 votes in a senate of 100.
What were the charges?
The House passed two counts (articles) of vote for impeaching trump. The first was abuse of power by the president where he is charged with coercing and collaborating with Ukraine as the president to withhold taxpayer’s money to his own advantage. The House passed the vote against Trump by 230 ayes to 197 nays. The second article charged him with attempting to block a Congress investigation against himself amounting to obstruction of justice. The House voted 229-198 to pin Trump on the wall of impeachment on both counts.
Trump has already called the impeachment proceedings as an unprecedented witchhunt. He tweeted: SUCH ATROCIOUS LIES BY THE RADICAL LEFT, DO NOTHING DEMOCRATS. THIS IS AN ASSAULT ON AMERICA, AND AN ASSAULT ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!!
