Harley Quinn isn’t the ‘only dame looking for emancipation.’ Post her break-up with the Joker, she realises she needs a fresh start. She finds some new bffs, as one can see in the recently-released trailer of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Following the disappearance of Batman, and Quinn’s separation from the Joker, Gotham City is calling for this squad of mean girls. On the path of redemption with her longtime lover gone, Quinn sets out to save Cassandra Cain, played by Ella Jay Basco.

Margot Robbie returns to reprise her role from the 2016 film Suicide Squad in Birds of Prey, which is directed by Cathy Yan. Robbie has for company an ensemble cast, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Huntress), Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Black Canary) and Rosie Perez (detective Renee Montoya). The team is up against Ewan McGregor, who plays crime lord Black Mask. Robbie, who had earlier shared the look of her character, timed one more post on Instagram with the trailer release on Tuesday.

Including Jared Leto’s Joker, none of the characters from Birds of Prey’s companion film Suicide Squad seem to have a major role in the upcoming 2020 release. Warner Bros released the promo ahead of Joker, which is set to release this week. Both happen to be standalone films. While Suicide Squad was criticised for its flashy aesthetics, Birds of Prey picks elements from its comic counterpart as well as the movie to create a new identity. It borrows the strong visual elements of the previous movie to create an unsubtly flashy look. Birds of Prey is set to release on February 7, 2020.
