Donald, Trumped!

Defeating Republican Party nominee and incumbent President Donald Trump, Democratic Party candidate and former vice president Joe Biden is set to become the 46th President of the United States. Biden’s win in native Pennsylvania — a key state with 20 electoral votes — helped him secure over 270 electoral votes. The former VP turns 78 at the end of this month and will be the oldest US President when he is inaugurated in January. The oldest sitting president in the history of the US was Ronald Reagan, who was 77 when he left office in 1989.

This also means that the 74-year-old Trump will be the first one-term president since George HW Bush.

The US media — CNN, NBC News and CBS News — called the race in Biden’s favour just before 11:30 am (1630 GMT) as an insurmountable lead in Pennsylvania took the 77-year-old over the top in the state-by-state count that decides the presidency.

California Senator Kamala Harris, Biden’s running mate, has also become the nation’s first Black and South Asian Vice President, and the first woman to hold that office.

A few hours ago, incumbent President Donald Trump had tweeted that he’s won the polls by a big margin. Trump has been warning Biden not to claim presidency ‘wrongfully’ and has accused him of ‘stealing election’.

Hillary Clinton tweeted, “The voters have spoken, and they have chosen @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris to be our next president and vice president It’s a history-making ticket, a repudiation of Trump, and a new page for America. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. Onward, together.”

As America rejoiced, The Washington Post quoted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as saying: “Today marks the dawning of a new day of hope for America. A record-shattering 75 million Americans cast their ballots to elect Joe Biden President of the United States — a historic victory that has handed Democrats a mandate for action.”
