Blade Runner actor Rutger Hauer dies at 75
1 min readRemembered for portraying the renegade replicant leader, Roy Batty in the 1982 Ridley Scott classic, Blade Runner, Rutger Hauer died at the age of 75. The Dutch actor’s agent, Steve Kenis confirmed that the veteran actor died of an undisclosed illness at his Netherlands home on July 19. His funeral was held on Wednesday. While Hauer starred opposite Harrison Ford in the sci-fi movie, he made his Hollywood debut opposite Sylvester Stallone playing a terrorist in Nighthawks (1981). He was later seen in movies like Ladyhawke (1985), Wanted — Dead or Alive (1986), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), Batman Begins (2005) and most recently in The Sisters Brothers (2018). In Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, he plays the corporate villain running the Wayne Corp.
Hauer is remembered the most for his portrayal of Batty and the character’s “Tears in the Rain” speech, which he helped tweak for the 1982 movie. He tells Rick Deckard, played by Ford in the death monologue, “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe… Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”
