#JLF2023: A poetic Friday with Gulzar, Javed Akhtar
1 min readThe second day of the 16th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival, which is being held at Clarks Amer in Jaipur, will host a delightful array of poetic sessions.
Much-loved poet and lyricist Gulzar will be in conversation with Rakhshanda Jalil to discuss his recent anthology, A Poem A Day. He will speak of the power of poetry and the importance of the written word in the context of the book, which is an amalgamation of 365 poems across continents and cultures. As a tribute to the local languages and dialects, the poems that appear in English have also been transcreated by Gulzar in Hindustani, resulting in a bilingual masterpiece.
On the same day, Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi will also converse with Jalil about the multilingual anthologies of their respective fathers.
Dhanak is a collection of poems by Akhtar’s father, poet and lyricist Jan Nisar Akhtar that has been translated from Urdu by Sumantra Ghoshal. Daaera, a collection of poems by Azmi’s father Kaifi Azmi has been translated from Urdu by Mir Ali Hussain. Each anthology showcases twenty-five nazms of each of the iconic poets. Akhtar will discuss the two-book set of Dhanak, meaning ‘rainbow’, and Daeera, ‘circle’, which contain poetry that is evocative, colourful, and captivating.
On the same day, Akhtar will also be in conversation with Sanjay K Roy to discuss Nasreen Munni Kabir’s latest book, Talking Life.
