Shorty El Chapo gets a long, long term
1 min readMexican drug lord, Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, notorious as El Chapo, was sentenced to life in prison and 30 years in addition to that by a jury that found him guilty on 10 counts including drug trafficking, helming a criminal enterprise and conspiring to murder, among others. Chapo blew kisses to his wife while leaving the courtroom in what one of the defense lawyers admitted to the final goodbye.
Who is El Chapo?
El Chapo, now 62, was as the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, the most feared drug trafficker in the entire world. He was arrested multiple times before 2016 which led to his conviction, but managed to do a Papilon every time by hoodwinking the Mexican and US authorities. He was nick-named El Chapo or Shorty for his short height (He stands 5 feet 6 inches tall).
After the sentencing, El Chapo said he was denied a fair
trial. “Why did we go to trial? Why not sentence me the first day? The jury was
not necessary then,” he told reporters.
