Iranian Instagrammer, known for photos resembling Angelina Jolie, sentenced to ten years in jail

Iranian Instagrammer Sahar Tabar, who went viral for posting photographs of herself resembling Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, has been sentenced to ten years in jail for ‘corrupting youth’. She was arrested a year ago over her social media activity. Tabar, whose real name is Fatemeh Khishvand, had claimed to have had fifty surgeries to look like Jolie. 

Also referred to as the ‘corpse bride’ for looking like a spooky version of the Hollywood actor,’ the 22-year-old would post heavily distorted pictures of herself, created using makeup and editing. Her pictures resembling characters played by Jolie had gone viral on social media.

Initially charged with blasphemy, instigating violence, gaining income through inappropriate means and encouraging youth to corruption, Tabar had called on the actor to campaign for her release. “The Islamic Republic has a history of tormenting women. We need to be united against this gender apartheid,” the Guardian quoted her as saying.

Medical records suggested that she had a mental illness, with a history of visits to psychiatric hospitals. Tabar is reported to have  gained fame on Instagram after posting a series of images of her face altered through plastic surgery. She had altered her face through cosmetic surgery which resembled a spooky version of Jolie and was dubbed as ‘Zombie Angelina Jolie’. In an interview to the Russian website Sputnik, Tabar had earlier said, “Every time I publish a photo, I paint my face in an increasingly funny way. It is a way of expressing yourself, a kind of art. My fans know that this is not my real face.”
