Thrilling finish to a cliffhanger Sunday
2 min readIn what could beat cliffhangers that the likes of Game of Thrones have gotten us used to, this Sunday saw a nail-biting finish to two much-awaited games — the ICC World Cup 2019 final and the Wimbledon final. Each game had its edge-of-the-seat moments. Novak Djokovic clinched his fifth Wimbledon title, beating Roger Federer in the longest ever final that lasted 4 hours and 57 minutes, while England picked up their first-ever WC title beating New Zealand in a penalty shootout-like super over.
Winning the super over toward the end of an adrenaline-pumping match, the English side claimed the Cup for the first time, matching up to the Kiwis’ 241-8 that landed them with tied scores. The final over was the true thriller, with England needing 15 runs to win. A little while later, New Zealand failed to match up to England’s 15 runs scored in the super over.
In the other game closely followed across the world, Novak Djokovic became the men’s singles champion beating Roger Federer, who had landed in the final after defeating his long-time arch rival Rafael Nadal in four sets. Djokovic had won against Roberto Bautista Agut in the semis in an equal number of sets. The world number one, Djokovic defeated Federer 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 13.
The 32-year-old Djokovic saved two match points and shattered Federer’s bit to become the oldest Grand Slam champion at 37.
