With educational institutions shut down and internet services blocked, people in most parts of North India woke up to deserted streets and tuned in to television channels for an update on the long-awaited Ayodhya verdict on Saturday morning. What followed was on expected lines, as residents, especially in communally-divided localities remained on edge expecting tensions to flare up.

For long, the Hindu majority in India has been echoing the chant of ‘Mandir Wahin Banega’ on every possible outlet — from social media to their own living rooms, street corners to television studios. On Saturday, the Supreme Court of India also sang the same tune, ruling that indeed Mandir Wahin banega (the temple will be built there).

SC quotes Guru Nanak Devji’s visit to Ayodhya and Ram Janambhoomi Mandir in 1567-1568 Vikram Samwat 1510-11, which is equivalent for 1510-1511 Georgian Calendar.

SC quotes the examination as evidence that the Hindu pilgrimage existed much before Babur invaded India. Also, that Guru Nanak’s visit doesn’t mention the rule or invasion of Babar during his visit to the site.

The SC chalked it out in two simple decisions — setting up of a trust for construction of the Ram Temple at the disputed site, allotment of a 5-acre alternative plot for building of a mosque. It also barred the Nirmohi Akhara’s lawsuit contending that it is not a devotee of Ram Lalla.

The Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute of several decades, hopefully, draws to a close with the SC verdict outlined on November 9, 2019. The entire disputed land spanning 2.77 acres goes to Hindu parties, as the Centre has been directed to form a trust within three months to oversee the construction of the temple. The Sunni Waqf Board will get 5 acre of alternative land, as ruled by the 5-judge bench of the apex court. While ruling that the Nirmohi Akhara suit was not maintainable and it has no priestly rights, the SC also directed that it be given appropriate representation in the Ram temple trust.

Internet services were already suspended in Uttar Pradesh cities at Friday midnight, while neighbouring states implemented the same on Saturday after the verdict came out. Besides cities in other states, restrictions under section 144 of the CrPC were also imposed in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday as a precautionary measure in wake of the judgment.
