It was only a matter of time. The pandemic has entered the dressing rooms of the cricketers playing in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. The IPL rescheduled the match to be played between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) match slated for Monday, May 3, after 2 KKR players tested positive.

“Varun Chakaravarthy and Sandeep Warrier were found to be positive in the third round of testing in the last four days,” an official statement from the IPL read. “All other team members have tested negative for COVID -19,” the IPL said.

The infected players have been isolated from the rest of the squad members as the IPL management gets down to reviewing the calendar of the matches. The KKR have now been advised a daily testing routine to identify any other possible cases and treat them at the earliest. “The medical team is determining the close and casual contacts of the two positive cases during the 48 hours prior to collection of the sample that returned the positive test results,” the official statement said.

The covid-19 penetration in the cricket matches comes at a time when a section of the citizens have been questioning the purpose of ongoing series at a time when the country is grappling with an overload of cases and an unprecedented wave of deaths due to the virus.
